Q: If the the result from a semen analysis shows a small amount of sperm, can I still have a child?
A: Yes you can. But the chances are low. If you want to increase your chances, it is recommended to have IUI or IVF/ICSI treatment to help make the fertilization between egg and sperm easier.
Q: Will extracting cells from the embryo for chromosome testing cause disablities to the children in the future?
A: No. The cells during the first stages of the embryo are not specific to an organ. If the embryo is strong and healthy, it wouldn’t have difficulty in dividing more cells.
Q: In IVF treatment, why must the embryo be cultured for 5 days? Will longer period (e.g. 6-8 days) have better results?
A: The embryo stage during the first 5 days is called a Blastocyst stage, which is the period where the embryo begins to divide into two cells and more naturally and is healthy enough to be transfer into the uterus. If the embryo is over 5 days old (6 or more), it will reach the period suitable for attaching itself to the uterus wall.

Q: What is the most effective way to treat fertility issues?
A: Each couple’s case is different. Some couples may not have sexual intercourse during the ovalution day, while some may need further assistance in terms of treatments such as IUI or injecting the sperm into the uterus, sperm analysis, egg collecting and embryo transfers. In each process the doctor needs to take example from 2-3 eggs and an amount of sperm to determine the right method of treatment. The fertility treatment usually starts with IUI. If the doctor has tried the treatment for 3 times without success, the next process is to consider IVF/ICSI to increase the chances of pregnancy.
