To me, children represent a kind of love that can never bring us sadness – it’s unconditional love. It means that no matter what happens, it will never let us down or leave us disappointed.
Khun Bee and Khun Mai told us about the start of their fertility treatment at Jetanin.
Khun Bee: I actually had never thought of having a child until I reached a certain point in my life, where I started having a change of mind and realized that I wanted to have a child. Maybe because I was the eldest child in a Chinese family, so my grandma and grandpa had been asking about a grandkid, especially when my siblings didn’t have any children yet. Though we were certain then, we knew that our ages might be an issue – I’m 46 this year and my wife is 37. So, we agreed to see a doctor, as we were concerned that our child might not be strong if we were to conceive naturally. We got advice from a friend who had been successful with their treatment at Jetanin and came straight here afterward.
We then asked about any obstacles or concerns the couple might have encountered during their treatment.
Khun Mai said “It was the first medical treatment that I felt on edge from beginning to end, starting with the first round of egg stimulation where we retrieved 10 eggs, but none of them could be used. I was upset, and I knew Khun Bee felt the same way.”
When your initial expectations weren’t met, how did you manage to overcome the disappointment?”
Khun Mai: Once we started doing it, we had an expectation. So, when it didn’t go as expected, it’s normal for us to be upset, to be disappointed. I felt like I didn’t take care of myself well enough. After that, I started trying to take care of myself more. We talked to each other and stood back up again. I started completely changing my daily life and eating only healthy food – we just tried our best with everything we could. When it was time for the second egg collection, we got only 5 eggs, but all 5 were good-quality eggs. So, we could then proceed to the next steps. There were a few bumps here and there, but we got through them all until the embryo transfer. I think many issues were caused by stress and worries.
Khun Bee and Khun Mai went on to talk about their feelings after finding out about the pregnancy.
Khun Bee: My first feeling was gratitude that our child chose to come to the two of us. That day our world was very bright. Our thoughts changed within a split second. We could only think about how we must take care of them. We even thought about what school we would let them study at when they grew up. Every image was flowing into my head even though he was still in the womb. That’s because, to me, children represent a kind of love that can never bring us sadness – it’s unconditional love. It means that no matter what happens, it will never let us down or leave us disappointed. The day we found out about the pregnancy, we were very happy because we had been trying so hard in every step. The second we saw our baby’s face, we knew they were the love we had truly been waiting for. Just seeing them smile, watching them grow, or seeing them learn to walk made us really happy. That’s why we are planning to have the second one. Maybe next year, the year of the dragon, we will be back to see Dr. Pim
Then we talked about their roles as parents that make them understand the value of many things in life.
Khun Mai: I’ve got to truly experience what it means to be a mother and understand how profound it actually is. Another thing we have seen is how my parents and my in-laws have become much happier. The house has become livelier. It’s like they’re taken back in time to when they were raising us. So, apart from being happy to have our own little one, I’m overjoyed to see our parents’ smiles return.
Khun Bee: That’s true. I’d not seen them smiling like this for a long time. When we’ve become working adults, we have made our own lives, and maybe we’ve become more distant. But ever since our baby came, they have become the center of happiness for everyone in the family.
Khun Bee and Khun Mai continued, “We would like to thank Dr. Pim and Jetanin Hospital. This place has truly erased the image of a doctor appointment being just talking and getting a prescription. It’s changed my perception because it’s not like that at all here. Dr. Pim has almost become a friend of ours as she has been a good advisor who paid attention to every little detail. It didn’t feel like she’s only seeing us as patients, but she has really understood us and gave us advice as a caring friend. Dr. Pim made both of our treatments very pleasant.
Khun Mai continued, Let me talk a little about the hospital. We feel that there are a lot of experts here and every step was taken with care. The place is clean and tidy and all staff are very friendly and attentive. We have been really impressed with Dr. Pim. We feel like she’s both our friend and advisor like Khun Bee said. She has been with us every step of the way and was always there to encourage us.
I want to tell everyone who is in the process of the treatment – don’t just give up hope…because when your hopes come true, it’s happiness that’s worth waiting for.
Khun Bee: It is happiness in a form that we have never encountered. Whether it’s the time spent with them, hours skipping sleep to be with them, or spending money with them – they are all worth it. We don’t even have to eat at a fancy restaurant. Just having a meal together with our kid at a normal restaurant can feel special because they are right next to us.
Khun Mai: I would like to encourage every couple to be patient and determined to do everything in every step as much as possible. So, when it doesn’t succeed, there won’t be any regrets, but one day, when you do succeed, you will feel the love and happiness you have never experienced.
